Mexico is full of urban characters that are not given the place they deserve. One example of this is the taco makers, specifically the female taco makers (las taqueras), as their practice is generally associated with men. Through the representation of a mystic character in an object “La Taquera” (the female taco maker) was born, to tribute all those women around Mexico that perform this occupation, considered art by some, or at least by their palates. The study of urban characters was centered around the San Juan Market, a popular market in Guadalajara where many trades take place. As a result of deep analysis, the female taco maker was chosen, breaking the machismo rules and stigma associated with this practice.

The chair takes inspiration from the physical form of the character, mimicking the “delivery of a plate” position: mirroring the humbleness of the taco maker, always ready to help and serve her clients. La Taquera seeks to reflect exterior delicacy, thus interior hardness, such as the character: brave and bold to face long working hours. La Taquera’s composition steps aside from the stereotypical dining and lounge chair typologies, rethinking the morphological elements that construct an object.

As a result of a deep analysis of the urban context and how the character develops in it, the chromatic selected for the pieces allude to specific elements associated with the urban scene. For this first stage, three colors were selected: the dark green alludes to the ingredients used to prepare the tacos, the light white focuses on the characters’ working area, always clean and steady, and finally the dark black alludes to the instruments used to prepare food.

La Taquera is handmade in lacquered red oak by Carpintería Rosales in Irapuato, Mexico.
