The Cactus vases are handcrafted pieces inspired by the resilient cactus, embodying the strength and beauty of the Mexican desert through organic form and raw volcanic stone.
vases

The Cactus vases reinterpret the cactus not only as a symbol of Mexican identity but as an enduring emblem of the country’s landscape. Incorporating flowers as signs of growth and resilience, they evoke the ability to flourish in arid and demanding environments. Crafted from basalt, a volcanic rock valued for its hardness and rich texture, these pieces embody the same strength and beauty found in the desert, translating resilience into material form.
Commissioned by Galería Mexicana de Diseño for the XV Anniversary of Design Week Mexico, the project presents two hand-carved sculptural vases that recontextualize the cactus through a meticulous, craft-based approach. Honoring traditional stonework while embracing the rawness and porosity of basalt, their organic forms and tactile surfaces invite a direct connection to nature’s quiet persistence. More than functional objects, the vases stand as tributes to survival, adaptability, and the beauty that emerges from even the most challenging conditions.
Cactus was designed for Galería Mexicana de Diseño, the first Mexican design gallery.
