/ the sunset we made.

The Sunset We Made is participatory installation and performance-workshop that reimagines the piñata as a joyful, ephemeral ritual for collective making, connection, and sunset-inspired contemplation in public space.

The Sunset We Made is a site-specific installation and performance-workshop for RAUM Utrecht, inviting the public into a playful yet reflective ritual of collective creation. Presented as part of Zon, Zee en de Straat in Utrecht, the work reinterprets the piñata not as a festive object destined for destruction, but as a medium for appreciation, co-creation, and impermanence.

Made from crêpe paper and papier-mâché, the installation embraces the amateur spirit of piñata-making and welcomes neighbors – children and adults alike – to leave their mark during a participatory workshop. The work transforms communal crafting into a moment of shared contemplation, where participants are guided to make and personalize symbolic “sunset piñatas.” These are then installed, played with, and eventually destroyed, celebrating the impermanence of both the object and the collective experience.

Drawing inspiration from the fleeting beauty of the sunset, The Sunset We Made challenges conventional ideas of design and authorship. It fosters a space of joy, vulnerability, and togetherness, where strangers co-create ephemeral suns and witness how they change, fade, and dissolve over time. The result is an interactive public space intervention that is never the same twice, as piñatas come and go, embodying the constant impermanence of the world around us.
